BbTBO3jCYAE9JcaFollowing some gameplay video, NiNTENDOMiNATiON tweeted about the Wii U Virtual Console version of A Link to the Past. Apparently the game plays at 50Hz, which is a bit strange. It probably has something to do with the fact that this is the PAL version of A Link to the Past and because A Link to the Past came out in 1992.

In this context, NiNTENDOMiNATiON is referring to the frame rate when talking about Hertz. For televisions, the refresh rate of the screen is measured in Hertz, where 60Hz means the screen updates 60 times per second. However, for some reason A Link to the Past on the Wii U Virtual Console plays at 50Hz, or 50 frames per second. Peculiar.

Normally televisions are set at 60Hz or 120Hz, which means that a few frames from the game will be displayed for a little longer than they need to. This difference of game frame rate and television refresh rate is likely due to the fact that 50 frames per second used to be standard in the PAL region, especially when A Link to the Past release.

The slight difference between 50 frames per second and 60Hz on televisions shouldn’t be a big deal, however. Nobody playing would even notice.
