With the advent of Lofi Girl and similar projects, lo-fi is this generation’s most accessible and malleable form of musical expression. The number of Zelda-related projects in this space is inspiring, which is why we have to highlight this awesome album called Hylian Serenity: A Chill Tribute to Ocarina of Time by Sanjesh P.

The eight-track album features one fan-favorite after another. The tracklist includes:

  1. “Title Theme (Chillhop Remix)”
  2. “Fairy Fountain (Synth Remix)”
  3. “Zelda’s Lullaby (Acoustic Cover)”
  4. “Lost Woods (Chillhop Remix)”
  5. “Kakariko Village (Acoustic Cover)”
  6. “Zora’s Domain (Jazz Funk Cover)”
  7. “Gerudo Valley (Acoustic Cover)”
  8. “Gerudo Valley (Jazz Funk Cover)”

The album starts off with the nostalgic “Title Theme (Chillhop Remix),” paired with plucking guitars that continue into “Zelda’s Lullaby (Acoustic Cover)” later on. “Fairy Fountain (Synth Remix)” has atmospheric percussion with an all-too-familiar, fairy-inspired chiming. The “Lost Woods (Chillhop Remix)” is arguably the most surprising, as its slower melody layers against shakers and dissonance for a blissful listening experience.

Kakariko Village (Acoustic Cover)” keeps the sharp guitar from earlier tracks with softer backing to highlight the famous melody everyone knows and loves. The album’s diversity continues in the snazzy “Zora’s Domain (Jazz Funk Cover),” which maintains the chillhop aesthetic but weaves in keyboard and thumping bass as the track’s heartbeat. Then, the “Gerudo Valley (Acoustic Cover)” is another one that honors the fan-favorite melody alongside inspired drumbeats.

The final track is another banger rendition of the previous. “Gerudo Valley (Jazz Funk Cover)” features even more instruments. The modern drumming and resonant guitar solo is a welcome inclusion and creative flex. There is even some ultra-precision xylophone action to lighten up the vibes, complemented by chiptune-inspired riffing.

Be sure to listen to Sanjesh’s other work on Spotify where you can find more original work and cozy video game homages, including “Dire Dire Docks” from Super Mario 64 and “Tifa’s Theme” from Final Fantasy VII.
