Link’s Awakening‘s opening sees Link wake up in Marin and Tarin’s home and enter the prosperous town of Mabe Village. This village provides players a first taste of what Koholint Island has to offer in terms of unique citizens. Likewise, the music that fills your ears in Mabe Village provides a sampling of the game’s entire amazing score. With the remix we’re listening to today, the tune now sounds more like Link is visiting a block party.

This reworked version of “Mabe Village” comes to us from Blake Troise (AKA PROTO·DOME) of OverClocked ReMix, and is part of the recently released community collaboration album Songs of the Sirens: Link’s Awakening ReMixed. Called “Mah Boi“, this remix is described as a “plucky, funky, jazzy chip-prog take on ‘Mabe Village'”. From just listening to the reworked tune myself, PROTO·DOME basically gives the Mabe Village theme a heavy dose of chiptune vibes on top of what the score already provides.

Songs of the Sirens’ album director WillRock agrees with this as well, since he always expects something great from PROTO·DOME:

WillRock: “Blake is one of those people who constantly delivers, and as expected, he brought his signature jazzy chiptune stylings to the iconic “Mabe Village” track. However, this one goes a step further than the typical PROTO·DOME offering, throwing in progressive arrangement ideas, including an awesome 7/4 section, and some really creative change-ups, and even has an extended slowed down outro right when you think the track has finished. This has everything that makes a PROTO·DOME track great, but pushes things up by a level by taking things in unique and cool directions. Great stuff.”
