On the heels of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate‘s fifth anniversary, starting today January 11th, 2024 for those of us in U.S. timezones, new spirits will be appearing on the game’s Spirit Board. The spirits will be unveiled during four Spirit Board events during the coming days, and are set to feature characters from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, as well as Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Splatoon 3, and Pikmin 4.

It appears that King Rauru will be representing Tears of the Kingdom in this new spirit release, although time will tell if more Tears characters will make future appearances in the game. Speculation on which characters from newer games would be included in this January 2024 new spirit event began back on December 7th, 2023 when Nintendo announced special events to commemorate five years of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. At the time, Tears of the Kingdom, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and Pokémon spirits were appearing on many folks’ wishlists for inclusion. Ultimately, the new Spirit Board additions will likely please some and disappoint others who were hoping for more third-party characters to interact with during battles.

These new spirits will join a large host of power-up collectibles featured in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Primary spirits can be equipped during gameplay to boost a fighter’s physical stats, while support spirits can grant special abilities. These spirits also come in several strength tiers, or classes, ranking as Novice, Advanced, Ace, or Legend, and provide a complex array of effects. It will be fun for players to see how these new spirit inclusions fall into the fray!
