Since the announcement of Tears of the Kingdom, there was often speculation on whether or not there would be a change in character perspective. Fans had already gotten to play as Link in this world, so why shouldn’t they be able to play as Zelda?

In a recent interview with IGN, Tears of the Kingdom director Hidemaro Fujibayashi and producer Eiji Aonuma were asked about the role of Zelda, and they had a lot to say on the matter. When asked about a playable Zelda, Aonuma answered using a translator:

“Yeah, it is interesting when you think about the name of the series, the Legend of Zelda, but Link is always the main character. And Link has been the main character, and Zelda has always been involved, and they have a relationship and their own rules in each of the games. But it is true that, I think there’s always room for thinking about this type of thing and Zelda’s role. And there may be some sort of possibility for something like that in the future.”

It seems that our hopes for a playable princess are not too far off, as when he was asked directly about Zelda being a player character eventually, Aonuma responded in English with:

“Maybe. Maybe, maybe.”

It seems that the possibility of Zelda taking more mainstage in the next title is not off the table, but what do you think? Would you like to see a playable Zelda in the next Zelda game? Let us know in the comments!
