Over the years Link has had plenty of companions, but most of them are fairies, imps, or even hats! Though he’s had interactions with characters from common-races (like carrying Princess Ruto around in Jabu-Jabu’s belly), Link has never had a full-length game companion that was either a Goron, Deku Scrub, Zora, or any alternate races extended from those. To have a small floating fairy companion makes sense for functionality, but would a more humanoid companion be additionally useful to Link…

The Zelda formula has seen its fair share of deviations. Adventure of Link gave us a leveling system. Spirit Tracks let us control Zelda. Several titles, like Link’s Awakening, have completely fore-gone the use of the Triforce in the main story. But one aspect that hasn’t been visited is the idea of a party system. Imagine that while you were trying to solve a block puzzle enemies could be destroyed by a designated party member. What if Navi could actually…

Gameplay is without a doubt the most important feature of a Zelda game. Nearly every release has emphasized it over every other aspect — with the exception of Twilight Princess, which was designed to be a more cinematic experience — and rightfully so. Gameplay is the main feature of video games in general. The interactivity video games provide is something that no other visual medium can hope to recreate, making it an important factor in any video game, even if…

Zelda games could use some RPG elements. Some might argue that Zelda games already have RPG elements; Skyward Sword showcased an increased focus on character customization, and Zelda games have traditionally been confused for RPGs. However, in Zelda games, the focus has always been on adventure. Proper implementation of RPG elements would supplement the adventure elements and wouldn’t undermine them. Since the developers of Zelda games have traditionally been good at incorporating new elements, this change can be significant or…

Hey guys! Mailbag’s a little late this week because of technical problems. This time we have 12 questions. Lot of broad series questions. Most of the game-specific questions are about Skyward Sword and The Wind Waker. Enjoy! Click here to watch it or check out the embed after the jump. Questions and timestamps: (00:07) – Which aspect of the Zelda series is most important to you? (01:29) – I’ve heard there’s a fourth Triforce. Is it true? (01:36) – What…

This video is about bottles! Yeah, I know, sounds silly. Well as you can see from the subtitle, there’s a more important point I get to. You should watch it anyway, even if you have doubts, haha! I like bottles a lot, but there’s a game design aspect relating to them and RPG games that I wanted to talk about. Hey, see if you can guess the music playing! What do you guys think of the video? Do you like…

These days we seem to be hearing more and more talk about the Zelda series getting stale. Nintendo reusing the same structure in each game is a good example. And I don’t just mean the game in general (collect three items, plot twist, collect some more items, final showdown). I’m also talking about specific elements, such as dungeon structure. Even other elements of the series have been reused again and again. Villains, items, plot twists, kidnappings, magical objects. Some people…

Noah Glaser over at The Hidden Triforce has recently written an article discussing the possibility of a Legend of Zelda RPG. Noah makes the point that this was exactly what they did with the Mario Franchise and it launched an entire Mario sub-series of games. Perhaps the Final Fantasy series is a way to look at the possibilities for what a Zelda RPG game could play like. Here’s a tidbit from Noah’s article. Before anyone complains that “this won’t work.”…
