Companions have been a near constant feature in The Legend of Zelda ever since Ocarina of Time, when Navi was introduced. Since then, there have been many other companions featured within the world of Zelda. But what defines a companion, and what exactly are their roles throughout the games? Does Epona qualify as a companion? What about your Loftwing? Hit the jump to find out what I think!

Alarming buzzwords! Okay, before you panic, I’ll start off by saying that this one is mostly theoretical. But I wanted to talk about it because I think, while unprovable, it shows a lot of the nuances of certain scenes in Majora’s Mask, and that’s the whole point of Zelda Moments: To break down moments and discuss them. Last week I talked about Epona, and for possibly the first time, gave her some props on how she fulfills certain player fantasies…

This new/modified editorial series is an evolution of sorts of Favorite Zelda Moments, where, instead of simply discussing my favorite moments and talking about why I like them so much, I’m going to examine notable moments in the series in general — whether I’m personally fond of them or not — and give my thoughts on them. I’d like to start off with something I’ve talked about a bit before, which is Epona in Ocarina of Time. And, you know,…

Here it is, my final analysis of Ocarina of Time characters before I move on to characters from Majora’s Mask. A small compilation of some of the more significant side-characters, each individual analysis will look at a single aspect of each character/s, and explore the possible causes for each aspect. So without further ado, let’s get straight into it!

For any Zelda fan who loves to show off their car’s horse power, this is just the thing. Yet again, Sanshee has provided Zelda fans with another must have parody/product to show off our Zelda love, this one in particular refers to the trusty gallant steed, Epona from Ocarina of Time. For far too long I have gazed at these carrots on screen disappearing and reappearing, wondering how a horse can eat and run so fast in just moments. Only…

Hello Zelda Dungeoners, and welcome to another weekly dose of Flute Boy’s Meadow! This week, I felt compelled to cover a song that’s different; something unique, something that worked well with all the excitement of E3. Unfortunately most of my ideas stunk. Then it occurred to me; nobody is going to need help getting excited this week with all the great game announcements, so why not shoot for something more on the quiet side so people can take a break…

Welcome to another edition of the Zelda Fanart Spotlight. Today’s we are taking a look at a digital painting from Mexican artist R-SRaven. It features a touching portrait of Malon and Epona called Bring him back safely. The title helps tell the story of the painting, as Malon does what she can to help the Hero of Time on his journey and prepares Epona for the next time Link calls on her.

What does Zelda borrow or mimic from Celtic myths? Celtic mythology is responsible for such Zelda staples as Epona and Fairies, and there are a number of other notable and even shocking consistencies between the mythology and the Zelda series. Celtic myth is about warriors and heroes sent into battle instead of gods and spirits to save lands, fight evil creatures, rescue fair maidens, and discover magical artifacts. Zelda is modeled after fantasy tropes, and many of them date back…

Say what you will about Twilight Princess. Complain about its dungeons, its opening two hours, its art style, whatever you want. But do not complain about this game’s music. As part of my play-through of every Zelda game in a year, I finally got around to starting the GameCube version of Twilight Princess last night. As I slogged through the endless opening sequences of the game, one thing kept me from ever skipping a cutscene or complaining about fishing with…

Pretty much anyone who’s played a Zelda game in the last ten years should know what a transportation overworld is. After Ocarina of Time, which introduced the non-essential but compelling Epona, the series as a whole gravitated toward worlds designed around transportation. It started with Majora’s Mask, with sections of the overworld requiring either Epona, Goron Link, or Zora Link. They each offered their own form of transportation that regular Link could not access. Majora’s Mask’s tighter overworld made things…
