Tag: Dead Hand

It has been over 16 years since The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time came out for the Nintendo 64. Though not always viewed as the thematically darkest addition to the Zelda franchise, Ocarina of Time has its moments of terror. Traversing the Shadow Temple and Bottom of the Well both haunt players with their airs of death, darkness, and plain eeriness, giving a taste of what Nintendo had to offer in terms of the horror gaming genre. Other Zelda…

Recently, I published an editorial of the Best Under-Used Items Of The Zelda Franchise.  Previously, I had mentioned Dead Hand, being one of the scariest Zelda bosses of all time. I had also mentioned I would talk more about that subject at a later date. Well, today is that day. We’re going to take a look at some of the scariest Bosses/Events in the Zelda Franchise, and we’ll take a minute to appreciate the darker side of the series. Liam…

Would You Rather: Edition II

November 20 2013 by Cassie

Welcome to our second installment of “Would You Rather!” Last week we had a tremendous response to this piece, which is very exciting for everybody. After looking at all the discussion boards it seems like Zelda fandom is pretty split on which ride they’d rather have. If you missed out on last week’s article you can go check it out by clicking here. Otherwise, hit the jump to see this week’s match-up!

Playing through Ocarina of Time, I was always curious about the boss of the Shadow Temple, Bongo Bongo, and the boss of the Spirit Temple, Twinrova. My curiosity was furthered by finding online theories for Bongo Bongo, and the final words that Twinrova leave Link with after he defeats them in the Spirit Temple. Like my editorial on Bunnio, this will be more interpretive, looking at possible backgrounds and futures of the characters, rather than analysing what the characters are…

Dead Hand. Perhaps one of the most reviled Zelda bosses of all time. Not due to the tough challenge or monotonous boss phases, but due to the incredibly graphic nature of its concept. Not only was it a creepy concept for an enemy in the first place, it also managed to make its way into a children’s game, mentally “scarring” everyone who battled the creature. The enemy’s scare factor is relatively overplayed to say the least, but many jokes have…

Happy Halloween! It’s that time of year again; children dress as goblins, ghouls or zombies, and go door to door requesting tricks or treats (but only ever get treats); and adults throw on the nearest article of rarely-worn clothing and make up some kind of costume for the party they’ll be attending. It’s also that time of year when we all consider things that we fear. In the spirit of the season, today we’ll be talking about fear in the…

Ah, the Shadow Temple. It’s now time to review this infamous dungeon. Now, mind you, it’s not nearly as infamous as the Water Temple. People complain about the Water Temple’s design and say it’s repetitive and overly confusing, whereas the Shadow Temple just scares people. Horror is meant to scare, and for some people that’s not fun, so some people won’t like the Shadow Temple (or the Bottom of the Well, by extension), but for others that’s the fun part!…

Alright, so as promised I’m going to review all of the mini-dungeons in Ocarina of Time as part of one editorial. I’ll be covering the Ice Cavern, which comes before last week’s dungeon, the Water Temple. We’ll also be tackling the Bottom of the Well, which comes before next week’s, the Shadow Temple. Finally, I’m throwing in the Gerudo Training Grounds simply because it fits some of the aspects of a dungeon even if its status as one is questionable…

I’ve seen the Shadow Temple argued as both the greatest temple and the worst temple time and time again. But if there’s one fact that Zelda fans can agree, it’s got to be that this temple is really creepy. Whether it actually scares you or not is a different story, but the temple’s design, combined with it’s music, provides for a sinister feel and nightmarish experience. One enemy that adds to this mood is the Dead Hand, and Deviantartist LDamm has…
