Thirty-four seconds: that’s how much time was saved in the latest Breath of the Wild Any% speedrun world record.

An Any% speedrun is just what it sounds like: a speedrun where the only requirement is that the player reach a game’s end credits, using whatever means necessary as long as they are achievable natively in-game. With that said, champion speedrunner Player 5 took advantage of various in-game tricks, glitches, and optimizations to finish Breath of the Wild faster than any person has before. One notable speed strategy by the runner was to switch the game’s language to French, which alone helped shave off four seconds from their run.

In total, Player 5 beat the previous record by 34 seconds, setting the new record at 24 minutes and 15 seconds on May 15th, 2022. The previous record of 24 minutes and 49 seconds was set by speedrunner Koroks on May 3rd, just under two weeks before Player 5 set the current record.

This run is not Player 5’s only Breath of the Wild claim to fame, however, as they have many records for the game under their belt, such as in the All Main Quests (2 hours, 37 minutes, 34 seconds), All Dungeons (1 hour, 34 minutes, 10 seconds), and Damageless (28 minutes and 16 seconds) categories.

Player 5 says that a sub 24 run will “probably require some riskier strats” than those used so far, though the Best Theoretical Time, a culmination of the best segments from the best players, suggests a run of 21 minutes and 20 seconds may be possible.

What are your thoughts on this new record? Are you surprised? Do you think it can be beat, and if so, what runner or runners are you putting your money on? Let us know in the comments below!
