After decades of so-bad-they’re-good video game movies, it seems we may have turned a corner. Once the laughing stock of the film industry, video game movies are suddenly big money. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 set box office records for the sub-genre with a worldwide opening weekend draw of $141 million. Whether it is the Marvel effect or Hollywood’s hunger for fresh stories, video game narratives are suddenly mainstream and in demand by filmmakers.

The hype and sudden profitability have long-time fans dreaming about what could be next to make the silver screen. Recently, Jeff Fowler told ComicBook.com that he would be interested in working on a Super Smash Bros. crossover film. “Nothing would make me happier,” he explained, “than to just throw all the characters into a battle royale and do a big Smash Bros. thing. That would probably require some work from the lawyers before that could happen.”

Nintendo is famously protective of its intellectual properties. Still, with the Super Mario Movie headed to theaters and Nintendo’s history of collaboration with SEGA, it’s not impossible to imagine a deal getting done. If Fowler did manage to make a Super Smash Bros. film, it would likely be Zelda fans’ first opportunity to see Link grace the big screen. That is exciting indeed.

Tell us what you think! How likely is it that a Super Smash Bros. film could get made? How would you feel about Link’s first film appearance being in a crossover spin-off story? Share your reactions in the comments below.
