SheikAlways a hot topic amongst Zelda fans, Sheik’s gender has been discussed since the character’s debut in Ocarina of Time. However, Nintendo’s own Bill Trinen has decisively put the argument to rest with a statement that clarifies Sheik’s gender. So, what’s the verdict?

NOTE: If you have yet to beat Ocarina of Time and want to avoid any spoilers, you might want to shy away from the rest. Otherwise, hit the jump to find out!

One would think that the issue of Sheik’s gender is an open-and-shut case, right? Although seemingly a man, Sheik is later revealed to be Zelda in disguise, which in turn would make Sheik a woman by default. Contrary to that train of thought, for the longest time, many people claimed that Sheik was actually a male. It is shown near the end of Ocarina of Time that Zelda concealed her identity to avoid Ganondorf, as he was seeking her Triforce of Wisdom. Supporters of Sheik being a male state that Zelda used magic to actually transform from a woman to a man. Considering the fact that Zelda is known for her use of magic, this declaration really isn’t too far-fetched if you think about it.

The persona of Sheik is purposely kept androgynous. Sheik is presented as, and seen by others, as a man. Ruto herself actually refers to Sheik as “a young man” and “him” when Link finds her in the Water Temple. Sheik’s lean, muscular body type and demeanor further support this claim. Conversely, you could just as easily say that Sheik is a woman who tapes her breasts and abides by a strict workout regimen. Athletic women do tend to have builds much like Sheik’s. In addition, spin-off games like Super Smash Bros. and the recent Hyrule Warriors have more overtly suggested, and even referred to Sheik, as a woman. Add to that the fact that multiple sources, including Nintendo, have kept Sheik’s gender ambiguous, and it’s no wonder people have been arguing about it for so long.

However, Bill Trinen had this to say about Sheik:

“The definitive answer is that Sheik is a woman — simply Zelda in a different outfit.”

There you have it. After years of debating, this argument can finally be put to rest. For the longest time, I wasn’t even aware this fact was discussed, as I had always assumed Sheik was female. At the very least, it was certainly interesting to see this kind of speculation from the Zelda community! What do you think about this whole ordeal? What has your stance been on the subject of Sheik’s gender in the past?
