As one of the more eerie dungeons to crawl through in Ocarina of Time, the Forest Temple comes off as a haunted mansion when Link discovers its confines. Haunted by a small group of deadly Poes and all manner of creepy crawlies, there’s no easy way to get through this maze of a temple. Even if you do make it through all the dungeon-filled frights, you still have Phantom Ganon awaiting you at the end. That’s why it’s so interesting to see how one such person on YouTube decided to add more guns and brute force to the temple’s equation in their own unique way.

While said content creator, Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly, is more known for their interviews and video essays, that didn’t stop him from recreating Ocarina of Time‘s Forest Temple using a Doom II custom map editor. According to him, this map was built as part of a bigger 32-map pack he created during 2020’s COVID-19 lockdown in New Zealand. During development of these maps, Reilly found a whole new level of appreciation for those in the game industry.

The main goal with this Doom II version of the Forest Temple was to keep it as close as possible to the original, but to still make it fit into the Doom aesthetic. Take the original temple’s four initial Poes, for instance. Reilly had an initial idea in terms of a replacement for him that didn’t quite pan out:

My original idea was to kill 4 Pain Elementals (resembling the 4 ghosts) to allow the teleporter to open up to the the final area but I couldn’t work out how to program a teleporter trigger to open up when the 4 Pain Elementals die using Slade so I opted for the key option.

Reilly even asked commenters in the video which should be the next Ocarina of Time dungeon recreated in Doom II, putting out that trying their hand at recreating the Water Temple would be interesting, due to Doom‘s limits involving water physics. While the Shadow Temple seems to be the most obvious answer to the temple up next, I wouldn’t mind seeing him take a crack at the inside of Jabu Jabu’s Belly. Using the gore factor the Doom series is known for could definitely bring that dungeon up a notch.
