The Fierce Deity's MaskFor your next Majora’s Mask Month article revival we’ll be looking at another article from Zelda Informer’s collection of Bombers Articles. In this article we’ll continue to examine some theory about the nature of Majora’s Mask and the ties between it and The Fierce Deity’s Mask. The article is stuffed full of brilliant theories so I’ve pulled out a very plausible, yet intriguing, theory about The Fierce Deity’s Mask.

An important point within the article comes early and that point is that all of the masks in the game represent some creature or entity. All of them, except for, The Fierce Deity’s Mask. This is a very curious difference between the mask and all of the others. The author moves on to discuss the moon scene. The atmosphere of this scene makes it rather dream like. The question arises: Is it real? Does it really happen? The author suggests that it is a world created by Majora himself. In this scene, Link, as he plays with the children, must change is form to represent some other being, but in the case of Majora’s Mask there is nothing to represent a worthy opponent. So, because of Majora’s playful nature, Link must be given something to counter Majora, something that isn’t easily represented. After making the above points he author makes his theory known:

The conclusion that can be drawn is that the Fierce Deity’s mask never existed. It was all just a product of Majora’s mind. It was created solely for the purpose to surface the dark parts in Link’s heart and to make him appear as evil because Majora saw him as such due to the reasons mentioned above, and because Link opposed Majora throughout the game.

It sounds a bit silly, no? The mask doesn’t exist? Initially that may be the case, but it sounds very familiar to idealist philosophies. The traditional philosophy is that something only exists when someone somewhere is aware of it. This sounds a lot like the theory from the article. To further the comparison, because Link wasn’t aware of the mask it did not exist, and until he entered the dream land that Majora created did he begin to perceive the mask. It’s a theory I never thought about to be honest and this article does a great job of explaining where the theory comes from.

Can you believe this theory? Do you think that The Fierce Deity’s Mask is real? or is it a figment of our imaginations? Have I simply lost my mind? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
