Official Xbox Facebook account mentions Zelda

xbox-oneApparently even Microsoft can appreciate the impact The Legend of Zelda has had on gamers, even though it isn’t one of their franchises. The official Xbox Facebook page has been caught mentioning Nintendo’s popular fantasy adventure series in a recent post, and -believe it or not- the reference wasn’t meant as a snub.

Could this be an example of a major game company showing a token of goodwill to it’s competition? Find out after the jump.

Anyone with a working knowledge of the video game industry can’t help avoid knowing about the bitter rivalry that partitions the competing console manufacturers. Console wars between the likes of Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony and former combatants like Sega have polarized gamers for years. Seeing these companies mention their competition in a positive light is a true rarity. These circumstances are exactly what makes this post so bizarre. Well, that and it also being about American actor James Franco.

Xbox_Zelda_FacebookDid whoever is in charge of updating the Xbox Facebook page forget that The Legend of Zelda is a Nintendo property? Cynics might be tempted to believe so, but it is also entirely likely that the comment was made in genuine good faith. Zelda is an almost universal name when it comes to video games. It’s difficult to imagine even an ardent Microsoft fan not knowing what it is.

As weird as it is to see Zelda mentioned by an official Xbox source, the tiny acknowledgment should be viewed as welcome case of a rival recognizing a great game for what it is. With all the problems in the world, something as harmless as video games shouldn’t be a source of  constant division. Hopefully this refreshing call out will remind people that video games can have a positive influence on someone’s life no matter what system they are published on.
