Official Amiibo Site Launches

amiiboLinkNintendo’s new Amiibo figures become available on November 21st, 2014. To support the launch, Nintendo has put up an official Amiibo website with gameplay trailers, the lineups of available (and upcoming) characters, and of course links to buy them. Check out the highlights after the jump!

From watching the Amiibo trailer video it seems clear, if it wasn’t before, that Amiibo is primarily aimed at younger players, and intended to appeal to the same market as Skylanders. The figures add extra features, weapons, and functionality to compatible games, but just how that is going to play out is not yet clear. One can only hope that the features are interesting enough to appeal to a larger gaming audience.

The starting lineup includes Link, available on November 21st, with Zelda following in December, and with Toon Link and Sheik coming in February of 2015. There’s also a good variety of other Nintendo favourites like Mario, Kirby, Pikachu, and Shulk.

Of particular interest is the Hyrule Warriors trailer. The Link Amiibo gives access to the spinner from Twilight Princess which appears to be used more as a weapon in Hyrule Warriors rather than an item. The Zelda Amiibo gives access to a weapon rated 3 stars or over. New content is slated to arrive this month as well, although there aren’t any hints about what that is.
