Nintendo has obtained their Christmas present earlier than expected, as their six-year-old Switch console is breaking yet another sales record, according to data obtained by analytics company Circana. Based on the November 2023 sales numbers, industry analyst Mat Piscatella confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that the Nintendo Switch has surpassed the lifetime unit sales of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console in the United States.

While it’s amazing how strong the Nintendo Switch has done since it was released back in 2017, it doesn’t mean that the console hasn’t shown some small cracks in the armor over the years. In that same Circana sales report, the firm also confirms that current-generation console sales have dropped 24% when compared to November 2022, with the Switch showing the sharpest drop year-on-year since launch. It appears though that it’s not slowing the Big N down any time soon.

Said slow decline doesn’t seem to be phasing Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa. During an earning sales call in early November, he confirmed their sales numbers have surpassed expectations for the first half of this year. Furukawa even confirmed that we will be seeing the Switch as the company’s primary system throughout all of 2024. This appears to mean that there’s no Switch successor for the foreseeable future.

As of the time of writing, only two consoles are currently left above the Switch on the US lifetime sales charts: Nintendo’s DS handheld and Sony’s PlayStation 2. Considering we were just talking about the system surpassing the Wii back in July of this same year, I wouldn’t be surprised if by next Summer the console takes that silver medal. Regardless of what Nintendo’s President says, I have a good feeling that, before the end of 2024, we’ll be talking about an all-but-confirmed next-generation console from the company.
