Only Nintendo can come out of left field with an announcement like that of the New 2DS XL. Remember all the hints and teasers leading up to the possibility of a new addition to the DS family? Neither do I. However, as far as announcements go, Nintendo might have just excited us all about a handheld console we never even knew we wanted.

Compared to the original 2DS, the New 2DS XL has 82% larger screens while remaining lightweight and still containing just as much power as the New 3DS XL. The new console will be equipped with amiibo functionality, more controls like the C stick, ZL, and ZR buttons, and capable of playing all Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS, and most Nintendo DS games.

The feature that might seem like a drawback but could actually be the New 2DS XL’s biggest selling point is that games are only played in 2D. The 3D function has received both positive and negative feedback, but it’s widely known for being uncomfortable on the eyes and even causing headaches for some players. If consumers can play $50 less on the New 2DS XL and have the same experience they would have on a 3DS with the 3D disabled, then this new console might actually be a rather smart play on Nintendo’s part.

The New 2DS XL will launch in two different color schemes. Black/turquoise and white/orange. It will be launching in Australia and New Zealand for AU$199.95 on June 15th, while releasing in America for $149.99 on July 28th. However, as of right now it can already be found up for preorder at GameStop here.

What do you guys think of the New 2DS XL and it’s sudden announcement? Does this new addition seem pointless, or could it possibly sell well because of it’s lack of 3D function? Who’s actually looking forward to getting their hands on it? As always, feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments below!
