People who have played The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and have obtained the Master Sword know that once it is obtained, it is impossible to drop. However, a recent glitch was discovered that allows players to not only drop the Master Sword, but also duplicate it.

This glitch happens when enemies shoot a certain amount of arrows at any given time, which affects Breath of the Wild‘s memory management. One theory on why this works is that the game has a queue of actions it uses, such as loading models. By having enough arrows in the game, that queue is nearly overloaded. By switching weapons, bows, or shields, the game first adds the action of “Set this item as the currently equipped item” followed by “Load the item’s model, statistics, etcetera”. However, as the queue is nearly overloaded, only the first action can be added, thus allowing Link to appear as though he’s wielding the previous item you switched off of while still wielding the current item you switched to. By dropping this overwritten item, the game will consider it to be the original item you wielded, thus duplicating that item and replacing the old item. That way, when you pick up the weapon, it will be a duplicate of the original weapon.

It also affects Link’s inventory model, though its main purpose is to duplicate weapons, shields, and bows. What is interesting to note though is that if the Master Sword is duplicated and dropped using this glitch, there is an animation of it soaring into the sky as well as a message stating “The Master Sword has returned to the forest”. While this might have pertained to an earlier build of the game, it is amazing to see that Nintendo did think of this option should players decide to drop it to begin with, potentially never finding it again should it despawn or get lost.
