IMAG0083-1Nintendo’s 74th annual stock-holder’s meeting was held last week, and due to Iwata’s illness, Shigeru Miyamoto played a much bigger role in sharing the direction Nintendo is taking in the next year, and some of the new ideas about Nintendo franchsies, including the Legend of Zelda. After talking at length about Zelda Wii U’s “open world” concept, Miyamoto briefly discussed the future of the Zelda series on the 3DS.

Hit the jump to see Miyamoto’s quote and what it could mean for Zelda on the 3DS.

Miyamoto:

At the halfway point to achieving this goal (Zelda Wii U’s open world), we released “The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds” for Nintendo 3DS last year. We created the games in the traditional “The Legend of Zelda” series in steps that players could easily understand and follow; the player would obtain a new item in each dungeon, use the item to clear that dungeon and be able to enjoy applying the items in different ways after acquiring about eight items. However, in “The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds,” we broke that down and let the player rent different items from the beginning, so the player could use different combinations of items. In this way, we are gradually changing the structure of “The Legend of Zelda” series, and we are preparing to newly evolve the series for Wii U. In addition to that, we have ideas for Nintendo 3DS which we have not announced yet, so I hope you will look forward to them.

A Link Between Worlds was praised for its non-linear gameplay that allowed for more open exploration of Hyrule and Lorule. It is exciting that this was a step in the direction for the new Zelda’s open world. This also could indicate that a Zelda game on the 3DS will feature an open world similar to Zelda Wii U. I personally would love to see a 3D handheld Zelda with an open world. Of course, these unannounced ideas could also include brand new gameplay and puzzle mechanics, all of which would be very exciting.

This quote is also very interesting as far as 3D remake of Majora’s Mask. Majora’s Mask could be a part of these unannounced ideas, or the it could mean Nintendo is going to focus solely on a new entry in the series for 3DS.

What do you think? Are you excited to learn about the new ideas Miyamoto has for Zelda? Do you think that this could have an impact on whether or not Majora’s Mask gets remade on the 3DS?
