Twilight Princess is one of the largest and most sweeping adventures in The Legend of Zelda‘s diverse catalog, and its soundtrack is a key component of the game’s success. The game features arrangements of classic songs like “The Lost Woods”, “Zelda’s Theme”, and “Zora’s Domain”, which are coupled with thrilling and emotional news songs like “Hyrule Field”, “The Hidden Village” and “Midna’s Theme”. These different melodies and themes synchronize to create a diverse and iconic soundscape.

This massive symphonic medley, appropriately titled “Symphony of Shadows”, demonstrates the depth and complexity of Twilight Princess‘s mammoth soundtrack. In the seventeen-minute medley, musician Raymusique covers a laundry list of excellent songs including “Title Theme”, “Ordon Village”, “Hyrule Field”, “Midna’s Lament”, “Kakariko Village”, “Lake Hylia”, “Dark Lord Ganondorf”, and many other iconic tunes. It’s a true testament to the work done by Toru Minegishi, Asuka Ohta, and Koji Kondo that so many of these songs have become iconic parts of the Zelda musical pantheon.

Raymusique does an excellent job of updating the songs to sound distinct from their original version. While the original soundtrack was sometimes criticized for the quality of its sounds (being a MIDI soundtrack), the new arrangements are quite lush. One standout is “Kakariko Village,” which uses whirling eighth notes to enrich the song, along with a beautiful piano exit that captures the peaceful nature of the town. “Courage” (perhaps my favorite song from Twilight Princess) opens with a hovering strings note that builds an incredible amount of tension before the melody kicks in, building to a beautiful climax.
