Midna is one of the most beloved characters in the Zelda universe. The eponymous Twilight Princess is easily one of the most complex and nuanced characters in the series. The journey Midna takes from reluctant ally to beloved friend is the highlight of 2006’s Twilight Princess. In addition to her narrative importance, Midna receives key music themes in the game, which show up in key story and gameplay sequences.

One of these key sequences is the heart breaking “Midna’s Lament” (sometimes called “Midna’s Desperate Hour”) where Wolf Link must carry an injured Midna to Hyrule Castle. This harp and violin arrangement of “Midna’s Lament” by Patti Rudisill deftly captures the tone of the original piece, which has been the subject of many covers across the years. The harp and violin are ideal choices for the song and have great musical synergy. In the song, the harp provides a steady foundation while the violin tackles the main melody of the piece.

Overall, this is a beautiful arrangement of the tune that toes the line between beauty and tension. While the song plays during an extremely stressful sequence in Twilight Princess, “Midna’s Lament” also has an ethereal quality to it. This complex combination of tones sets the tune apart from other famous Zelda songs.
