Today, Nintendo released their Third Quarter Financial Results for the current fiscal year. The briefing reports both strong sales of the New Nintendo 3DS and overwhelmingly positive critical reception of recent software titles. One such title emphasized was Majora’s Mask 3D, which Nintendo notes for its high Metacritic score and strong initial sales. In fact, Majora’s Mask 3D‘s initial sales in the US and Europe outpaced that of its predecessor A Link Between Worlds by over 200,000 units.

The graph above notes the preliminary sales data for the release week of Majora’s Mask 3D and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate compared to that of their predecessors (A Link Between Worlds and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, respectively). It is interesting to note that the “release week” for these two titles is comprised of only three days in the US and two days in Europe. Nintendo cites “strong pre-orders” and “highly-acclaimed gameplay” for these games’ early success.

From the graph, we can see that combined US and European initial sales of Majora’s Mask 3D (MM3D) outsold A Link Between Worlds (LBW) by over 200,000 units. In Europe alone, MM3D sold approximately 50,000 more units than ALBW, whereas in the US, MM3D sold over 150,000 more units than ALBW. While A Link Between Worlds is a fantastic game, it’s understandable that Majora’s Mask 3D would prove to be the more popular game. Considering the nostalgia of Majora’s Mask fans and the high demand for pre-order bonuses, Majora’s Mask 3D‘s success was fairly easy to anticipate.

Did you pick up Majora’s Mask 3D last week? How do you think it compares to A Link Between Worlds? Let us know in the comments!
