Many fans may remember the 2012 fan-animated HD Majora’s Mask trailer, showing off how a Majora’s Mask remake could look on the Wii U. This trailer was the work of Spanish artists Pablo Belmonte and Paco Martínez Odewill, who have worked on many similar fan projects in the past. While not the official Majora’s Mask remake, the team announced the project was still working toward something beyond the trailer. Today, the team announced their Iconic Worlds project, a virtual reality experience that allows players to explore the team’s past projects, including the Majora’s Mask trailer.

Shortly before the announcement of the Wii in 2005, Belmonte and Odewill released the “Nintendo ON Hoax,” a video claiming that Nintendo’s next console would be an advanced Virtual Reality headset. While the Wii ultimately debunked such an idea, the Nintendo ON turned out to be pretty representative of VR headsets seen in recent years, such as the Oculus Rift.

Ten years after the release of this hoax, Belmonte and Odewill have announced their newest project, Iconic Worlds. Their development team hiPolygon are utilizing the Oculus Rift to create explorable VR environments based on their past projects. From the teaser, the project appears to let players traverse and explore the 3D worlds. The teaser did not reveal any further details on how players will interact within the worlds, but more information was promised with future updates. The duo has confirmed two environments to be included in the project: a world based on their Matrix parody and (more excitingly) a world based on their Majora’s Mask trailer. In addition, the team promised other original environments for the project.

The teaser designates these worlds as “Volume 1,” so more may be announced with future volumes. While the Oculus Rift is currently available to developers, the hardware is not yet widely available commercially. Information on when exactly Iconic Worlds will become available is currently unknown. Interested fans can look out for more information on hiPolygon’s Twitter and Facebook.
