graphic_-_easter_eggsHappy Easter, everyone! Today, we are looking left and right for chocolate eggs left around our homes, but every now and then, we need to do a similar duty in Zelda games, and seek out hidden jokes and references Nintendo has left behind in development. From some of the earliest games in the series, all the way up to A Link Between Worlds, there are Easter eggs to be found, so let’s look at some of the best.

CameoPortraitsIt is really no secret that the Super Mario series has made its fair share of cameos in Zelda games. Nearly everyone that knows Zelda’s N64 titles all that well will recognize the pictures of Mario and friends hidden in Ocarina of Time‘s Hyrule Castle, or the Mario mask on the Happy Mask Salesman’s backpack in Majora’s Mask. And that’s not even to mention the rather plentiful Super Mario baddies in Link’s Awakening. While, yes, it is just Nintendo throwing some of their best series together for a quick laugh, it is still neat to see some of our favorite characters popping in for a moment.

Strange_Hand_(Oracle_of_Ages)Personally, though, some of my favorite Easter eggs are ones of Zelda content showing up again in later Zelda games. I can’t get enough of that old ghostly hand hanging around inside a toilet. ??? has appeared a few times in the series, and most recently in Skyward Sword, acted as a WAY-more-creepy-than-usual ghost looking for love, and it was more than a little hilarious.

Of course, we can’t forget about Nintendo’s refusal to let fans forget about their old consoles. The Wind Waker‘s GBA-shaped Tingle Tuner, Phantom Hourglass‘ “Dee Ess” Island, Ocarina of Time‘s Rumble Pack-shaped stone of agony, and of course, Majora’s Mask 3D‘s huge Gamecube in the bomb shop, are all examples of Nintendo wanting to let veteran players keep an eye out for hidden jokes and objects, and a good way for the developers to have a bit of fun.

What is your favorite Easter egg in the Zelda series? Is it something obvious, or something you didn’t notice for a long time? Leave a comment below!
