dk2-productNintendo has often stood as the beacon of innovation in the gaming industry, perfecting certain hardware, games and control schemes that other companies do not get to first. These days, though, a big new fad is virtual reality, something that Nintendo has not dabbled in in years. Prosperous days are coming for Oculus VR and other up-and-coming VR visor creators, who are now partnering with the big gaming companies to bring us new experiences, and with Nintendo’s NX just over the horizon, there are rumors that the Big N will be one of those partners. If such deals are made, could Zelda be a series that gets involved in virtual reality? We have come a long way since the Virtual Boy, so maybe Nintendo can surprise us with some real VR greatness, with the help of their biggest adventure series.

legend-of-zelda3dSome adventure titles like The Elder Scrolls, as well as some fan mods of various Zelda games, have proven that first-person adventure games work just fine. I can really appreciate the immersion that comes with literally seeing through the eyes of your character, and I bet that Zelda could prove to be really sweet if it implemented that kind of gameplay. I have even commented in the past how were someone to make a Skyward Sword mod that works with Oculus Rift, the combination of 1:1 motion controls and virtual reality could prove to be a phenomenal experience. Still, I can’t imagine Zelda having such a system. I think that there is something about seeing Link himself go through the adventure that holds true to the Zelda series. First person sword-fighting would be great, but imagine what would be lost without Link’s recent showings of emotion, the more complex sword techniques, or even the simple view of your character surrounded by dangerous monsters – all of which would be lost with a first-person playthrough. Perhaps the developers could make VR – or just first-person – a play option for future games. Either way, playing in first person? Not really my thing.

What do you guys think? Do you think Zelda titles are worth having virtual reality implemented? Drop a comment!
