wolf-link-amiibo-9There is a lot of talk these days about the morals behind games getting more and more expensive, but often having a lot more content made into purchasable DLC. This discussion has reached the Zelda fandom with Nintendo’s decision to put a new dungeon in Twilight Princess HD, which is unlocked with the Wolf Link amiibo. This is a very similar situation to having DLC, and many feel like it is not fair to players. Is this a wrong move on Nintendo’s part? Is it okay for something as big as a dungeon to require buying one of these figures?

UntitledI am not one for DLC, unless it is done right. I think that DLC should be extra content that is made after the developers FINISH the original game. Completely. Hence the term “expansion pack”. Things that are added to the game after all the original plans are implemented, like in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. Now, I know that nowadays, there are plenty of instances of incomplete games releasing too early, and the unused content that was already finished being used as DLC, which people are forced to purchase. But thankfully, Nintendo seems less inclined to do things like that. But if they do get into having DLC in Zelda, this is one way I can appreciate. Firstly, it is not like something from the original version of Twilight Princess is being held behind another transaction – only this brand new dungeon. Yes, the content is already in the game, and that kind of makes it less okay, as it is not content they made afterwards, but you don’t simply buy the dungeon. You still get a figure out of it that is of rather impressive quality for its price, and that amiibo unlocks other things in other games as well, which is its advertised function, and is a rather good deal.

Many people, myself included, have asked for something more significant than costumes and skins to be unlocked with amiibo. But then, when it finally happens, people are angry. In the end, we can either have fairly large unlockables like this, or have our cool new figures feel rather unimportant. And personally, I kind of like this outcome better. Besides. This is one of the very first bits of new content in the HD version. It is likely that other new material is to come, and that will not be unlocked with any external purchases.

What do you guys think? Are amiibos a fair way for Nintendo to have players unlock significant in-game content? Should the new Twilight Cavern be free to enter right off the bat? Drop a comment!
