It’s always great to see artists capture the Zelda universe in visually creative ways. A few days ago, animator and director Alexis-Francois Morand released an animated short film titled Ganon. The short follows the Great King of Evil as he travels across various settings and encounters several characters from the Zelda series. With amazing visuals and presentation, this is an adventure you’ll definitely want to check out.

Morand explains that the project acts as “a way of making an homage to [his] favourite games with a very loose narrative, while working on [his] digital painting, colour theory and composition with a little bit of animation thrown in.” I would say that the artist did more than accomplish this goal in the final work. The stylized art and presentation of this short are not just gorgeous to look at, but emotionally moving as well. Using Ganon as the focus was an interesting choice that gives viewers a way to identify with the mysterious character.

As you may have noticed, the short explores scenes from many different Zelda games. Ganon is seen sailing within a storm near Koholint Island from Link’s Awakening, lurking behind the Skull Kid in the Lost Woods, and investigating a set of ruins near Majora’s Mask‘s Woodfall. The art style, animation, and music (composed by Morand and James O’Connor Moneley) all work together to re-visualize these familiar locations in fresh and unique ways.
