It’s “Fanfiction Friday” again! Last week we explored the incredible story of ELOZE, and while it’s not plausible that you have finished that worthwhile story, we hope you have at least given the epic an honest chance. This week we are scaling it down a bit. While we had multiple suggestions for other solid pieces of work, we had one fan submit their own, and we strongly encourage others to do the same. This week, we are featuring a story titled “Succession” by our fan, Emma.

This work of course is still in development, as only two chapters are available, but one thing that it already does seemingly well is paint a picture of a living world outside the main character. While many writers tend to focus on heavy action and fan service, Emma brings it down to the character level. Each individual in her story has been given a personality, no matter their level of importance. One line that really caught my attention was during a casual conversation between nobles at a formal gathering.

“Princess? Do you find this story amusing?” he asked, a little worried because she did not seem to be paying attention.

This seemingly simple line gave life to a character that was in the story for no more than a few sentences. It gave him the presence of a man who acted before thinking, often prompted to be the center of attention, and was in good company with Princess Zelda. He was well-mannered, but only if he would otherwise be offending his Royal Highness.

In her second chapter, we get to experience how the Hylian Army communicates and thinks. Soldiers and commanders speak as though they each have their own thought processes and reasons for being where they are. It all fits together in a way that makes sense and feels real.

While many fanfictions try to take the reader through a quick and exciting adventure, usually of a mature nature, it’s stories like “Succession” that take a step back and really show us the depth that can be found within the

Zelda series.

I can’t say that everyone who reads it will enjoy it. Every reader has their own tastes, as does every

Zelda fan. I will, however, be keeping up with this one myself. I do enjoy the flow and direction that this story is taking, and think that it is worth a read for any fan of the Zelda series.

You can read Emma’s story for yourself on DeviantArt under the username bornahorse, here.

We still encourage you to share your favorites. The Zelda fanbase is always looking for more adventures to experience, be it through fanfiction, art, music, or any other medium, but please don’t be afraid to submit your work in any of our weekly features. If you have any fanfiction of your own, leave a link to it in the comments below and you might be featured next week.

Note: As always, please refrain from hating on fan-made works in the comments section. While some may not enjoy works posted by our fans, others will, and we wish to keep a friendly environment for all fans of the Zelda series. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but we want our fans to feel safe in sharing work they have passionately created here on Zelda Informer. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
