It is no secret that Breath of the Wild has the largest version of Hyrule to explore out of any game in the Zelda series. As listed on Zelda Dungeon’s interactive map, the ruined kingdom has hundreds of unique locations and encounters to uncover. Hyrule’s nine regions each have their own climates and atmosphere. In particular, I think its world creates a nuance and mystique. Though its land is impressive, Breath of the Wild was not the first time I felt this way in a game. Years earlier, a similar open-world experience managed to impress me with its sheer size. That game was Minecraft. The block-based sandbox is renowned for having gigantic procedurally generated worlds. Both of these games reward exploration with the resources you need to thrive in the vast, sometimes empty landscapes.

Reddit user Dinaeh has nearly completed a full-scale recreation of Breath of the Wild‘s map in Minecraft. This expansive project must have taken weeks of work to get this far. Each location and settlement has been created in an impressive level of detail. If one has shader mods installed in their Minecraft client, the game world looks as good as the actual terrains in Breath of the Wild. According to the announcement post, Dianeh started with a rough bump map to get the general shape and elevation of Hyrule. After this, he spent untold hours sculpting the various landscapes, towns, and Sheikah Towers. Additional users have contributed to the map to create a further sense of immersion in the blocky Hyrule. There are now custom Bokoblins in the map to serve as enemies. Special textures have been added to recreate the look of the ancient Sheikah’s Shrines and Towers. Overall, I would say that this map is quite impressive. Once it is completed, I would highly recommend any Minecraft-ers out there to give it a try.

This custom Minecraft map is not currently available for download, but Dinaeh has stated that they may make it available in the future. Stay tuned to their user page on Reddit right here for future updates.
