In the most recent issue of Nintendo Power, Eiji Aonuma commented about the Nintendo Wii U controller and what it could possibly mean for the Legend of Zelda series. A tidbit of what Aonuma had to say can be seen below.

I really think [having two screens is] one of the most exciting features of the system. Unlike the Nintendo DS, there’s distance between the television and you and your other screen. That really allows for some different interactions, some of which you saw [at E3]. For example, imagine having the contents of Link’s satchel available to you on the screen of your controller, and using elements of the pouch to interact with gameplay on the television.

With The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, we had the Nunchuck and Wii Remote sort of stand in for the sword and shield that Link carries. But in a game for the Wii U, I can definitely see something like the controller itself becoming the different items that Link is using, allowing you to interact with the game world and with the game items in a very different way.

Personally, while all this is nice and dandy. I’d appreciate it if Eiji Aonuma didn’t comment much on what the Nintendo Wii U can do for the Zelda series. We’re still 3 months away from the release of Skyward Sword and there is already speculation about what the next Zelda game on the next Nintendo home console will do. Let’s focus on one Zelda game at a time.

Having not played Skyward Sword yet, I’m more anxious to see what are the new gameplay elements that have become accessible with the Wii Motion Plus controller. We’ve already seen a handful of ways to fight a variety of enemies and solve certain puzzles, but I’m certain this is just the tip of the iceberg. There is still so much we don’t know about the game from a gameplay or story aspect and this excites me much more than the Nintendo Wii U.

The new controller for the Nintendo Wii U is looking amazing… but I think I can wait until 2012 to start building the hype for that. For now, I’ll focus my attention on Skyward Sword, which will be releasing on November 18th in Europe and November 20th here in the United States.
