Sword drawn and ready. Can you recall the feeling of satisfaction with engaging in a jump attack, one heart left blinking, and then landing a finishing blow on an enemy as they then disappear into dust. Even if you are a new or experienced player of the Zelda series, Link’s iconic finishing move has been an undeniable staple of his tactical swordsmanship.

Of note, the finishing blow, in all its glory, has evolved in its presentation and gameplay over the years. While Twilight Princess perhaps presented one of the cleanest finishing/ending blows in the franchise, it allowed its accessibility in a unique way. In fact, we were only able to unlock Link’s battle moves through the game’s storyline. This design choice likely allowed for some judicious gameplay decisions when players faced off against foes of varying strength and defense. In contrast to the smoothness of the finishing blow in Twilight PrincessSkyward Sword instead primarily relied upon motion controls, which I personally felt limited an accurate and consistent delivery of this finishing move. While battle moves weren’t an upgrade option in Skyward Sword, we could in contrast upgrade items and weaponry, a tactic later masterfully executed in Breath of the Wild.

Yet oddly enough, Breath of the Wild did not showcase a finishing move for Link. It may have been a decision by the creators to focus more upon weaponry upgrades rather than Link having action sequence movesets, like a fatal blow or finishing move. With the sequel to Breath of the Wild on its way, I truly hope that we can have a return of this stellar finishing blow, especially so I can land a finishing blow with a soup ladle!

What are your thoughts on the finishing blow and would you like to see this iconic move return in the sequel to Breath of the Wild? If so, would it be a move that Link knows from the outset or rather an unlockable moveset as in Twilight Princess? Leave your comments below!
