Many dungeons in the Zelda series can be considered pretty straightforward, with the more or less simple task of getting from start to finish. Majora’s Mask steps away from this simplicity with the introduction of Stray Fairies, which can be collected and exchanged for rewards at the local Fairy Fountain.

This feature is unique, adding new depth to dungeons in this game. On top of solving the usual puzzles, players must search every nook and cranny of the dungeon’s complex rooms in order to collect all 15 fairies. Interestingly enough though, like with many aspects of the game, some fairy locations were changed in the 3DS remake. This added a new challenge for players who were already familiar with the original game’s layout.

This feature was a welcome surprise for me when first playing Majora’s Mask. Though sometimes nerve-wracking as I tried to get a fairy in a tough place, or forgetting one, the hunt added a new flavor to the dungeons and the rewards were well worth it. If I had to change anything, it would be to keep your collected fairies after resetting time. While this function encourages further time planning, coming close to finding all 15 then having to reset time and repeat the process all over again can be rather tedious. Still, the feeling of finally obtaining them all washes me with relief and joyous accomplishment, leaving me excited to return to the fountain and get my reward.

Are you a fan of this dungeon feature? And would you like to see this or a similar feature return in future Zelda games? We’d love to hear what you have to say, so let us know in the comments below!
