When I was a kid my mom used to take my brother and I to Blockbuster every Friday evening after school for us to rent a movie and a game. For those of you who are too young to know what Blockbuster was, it was an amazing store where you could rent movies and games for a set period of time. Think Redbox with a storefront. Anyway, my little brother was more of a gamer, but growing up we loved Sonic the Hedgehog, Kirby, Mario, Pokémon and the like. One Friday night we stumbled across a golden box and we took it home. We popped the disc in to our well loved GameCube, and when the music of The Wind Waker played through the TV, we were hooked.

The Wind Waker was not my first Zelda game, my first Zelda game was actually Ocarina of Time. I remember having to patiently wait for a turn from my brother and step brothers, or just wait until they got tired. I remember running around trying to figure out how to hold the N64 controller and getting irritated with Navi. I mostly ran in circles, and it would be years before I would ever finish the game. My first Zelda game was just a step in the direction I have found myself now.

I still fall back to The Wind Waker though. My brother and I rented that game for WEEKS on end until we finished it together. We would return the game just to simply re-rent it. You would think after the weeks of playing it we would just buy it, but we never did. Years later we played Twilight Princess together and my time with Zelda took a hiatus. That hiatus did not last very long though.

It wasn’t until I started dating my now husband that The Wind Waker made it’s way back into my life, and so did my love for this beloved series. I wasn’t one of the people that grew up with the series, but the series is something that has grown on me for so many years. I’ve found myself trying to play through all the games, and have found myself learning everything I can about the series and it’s lore. I have collector’s books and memorabilia, and I keep falling in love with these characters, and the series as a whole the longer I spend with it.

I cherish the memories I made with my brother, and they are some of my very favorite memories. I cherish the memories I’ve made with my husband, and I long to show off the series that I love to my future kids. I could go on and on about how special the series is and I probably have more stories to tell, but it’s time to hear from the rest of you!

What makes The Legend of Zelda special to you? Sound off in the comments.
