Throughout the Legend of Zelda series we meet many characters in the realm of Hyrule that touch our hearts, and others who set incite our rage. Although the main focus of the series itself is our protagonist Link, he meets many on his quest to save Hyrule who spark the fire of inspiration within our hearts.

Zelda as the princess of Hyrule and wielder of the Triforce of Wisdom, has made frequent cameos in the series, and has aided Link, both in her true form, and as her alter ego, Sheik. Incredibly caring for her kingdom and her people, she has proven her willingness to save others time and time again through her selflessness and sacrifices. Although she is of royal blood, Zelda has proven that she is no damsel in distress, as demonstrated by her magical and combative abilities, as well as her calm and controlled demeanor.

In The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, a new princess graced our hearts filling a void we didn’t know was there. Midna in her imp form became the main follower companion, pulling at our heartstrings with her plight to regain her true form. Unlike the other princesses in the series, we have the chance to witness as Midna struggles to regain not only her throne, but her very being with the help of Link. As the player, we are able to experience Midna’s physical, emotional, and mental transformation very closely, and form a uniquely intimate connection with her character.

I personally have a love for Zelda and her alter ego, due to her inspiration on me when I was growing up. Zelda was kind, selfless, and gentle to everyone she met, and I wanted to be a good person like her. Secretly being a ninja and having the use of magical abilities also played a bit of a role, I’ll admit.

Although Zelda is my favorite, Midna quickly grew on me, and I would love to see more of her within the series. Midna gives us a different perspective on life, and that even if everything does not go our way, we have to fight for what we long for, or else risk losing it forever.

I also love that Zelda and other characters from the series make a cameo in the Super Smash Bros series. Let’s face it: nothing is more satisfying than beating on your friends and siblings in Smash with Zelda and/or Sheik. Now, give me the ability to lay the smackdown as Midna in both her forms and I’d be content.
