The recently released Final Fantasy VII Remake is, without question, the most ambitious re-imagining of a beloved video game I’ve ever seen. Far more than a simple port, or even an HD upgrade with some quality-of-life improvements, this title challenges the notion of what a remake can be. Setting even the gorgeous visuals and genre-bending combat aside, the characters feel so much richer, and the world more tangible. Some — myself included — may criticize some of its filler content. But overall, it’s the new gold standard that remakes should aspire toward.

Throughout my journey in Midgar, though, I couldn’t help but say to myself, “Man, when the heck is a Zelda game going to get this royal treatment?” Indeed, when I think about Final Fantasy VII and the recent Resident Evil remakes, I grow envious of folks who grew up with those games. For as much as I adore those games, I can’t appreciate them on the same level as the people who played the source material back in the day.

There are many Zelda titles that I would love to see re-imagined in a similar fashion. But when I think about the game that could benefit the most from such a remake, my mind instantly goes toward Ocarina of Time. Maybe it has something to do with the game being nearly as old as Final Fantasy VII, but I just see an opportunity to make that story so much more powerful than it already is. The notion of seeing characters like Ganondorf, Ruto and Nabooru developed further — who wouldn’t want to see that?! Additionally, locales such as Kokiri Forest and Castle Town could be made all the more lively. If nothing else, I’ve got to see those grand boss fights brought into the modern era.

I want to hear your thoughts, though. Which Zelda game do you think would benefit most from a Final Fantasy VII-style remake? Let us know in the comments below!
