Throughout the years, the Zelda series has taught me a lot about what I value in a video game boss. For as much as I enjoy overcoming tough-as-nails opponents, there’s something to be said about the pure, unbridled “cool factor” of many Zelda bosses. Not to suggest the series doesn’t have its fair share of challenging foes, but I’ve found that most of my favorites rank so highly for reasons beyond difficulty. Simply put, they’re just so fun to take down.

No entry embodies this principle better than Twilight Princess. Nearly each boss fight boasts an imposing, larger-than-life presence that couples itself wonderfully with a fun — if not particularly complicated — solution. Whether it’s dragging Fyrus by the soles of his feet or progressively smashing Blizzeta’s shield with a ball and chain, there’s an inherent novelty to these encounters that’s tough to match.

That said, the fight that always stands out to me as having the most satisfying of these gimmicks is the Temple of Time’s Armogohma. As simple as it is, no matter how many times I re-play this fight, it never gets old. Shooting it down from the ceiling, only to follow up by possessing a giant statue and slamming its fist onto the giant spider — that’s the stuff boss battles are made of. I promise, though: in real life, I’m trying to be a lot better about just picking the spider up with a paper towel and releasing it into the wild.

What about you, though? Regardless of whether it’s from Twilight Princess, which Zelda boss fight do you find has the most uniquely satisfying solution? Let us know in the comments below!
