Flicking through Hyrule Historia, it’s awesome to see the creative process that goes into crafting some of our most beloved characters and to see what could have been. From the strange and obscure, yet incredible concepts we’ve seen for Midna that range from a Tim Burton-esque hominid to fauns and apes each with bizarre masks, to the weird mechanical fairies explored whilst designing Fi, the Zelda team seem to explore EVERY possibility when it comes to designing characters.
For good reason too. The Legend of Zelda is a franchise overflowing with quirky personalities and creatures that define the series, so choosing the right ones must be a nightmare. However, do they always get it right? Ghirahim I don’t think could be a better villain, though it’s enlightening to see which directions he was taken in before being birthed as the fabulous demon mage/living sword we know today, though this isn’t true for everyone. The cast of shopkeeps in Skyward Sword’s Skyloft for example is far more bland than some of the ideas the team had, the potion shop owners especially. And there were characters that never made the cut that would’ve made Majora’s Mask‘s world seem sane.
But what do you think? Do you have a favorite piece of concept art? Do you think a different Midna, or Ghirahim, or whoever should’ve been used? Do you want to see more concept art from the series? Let us know in the comments below!
