Daily Debate: When Do You Think The Breath Of The Wild Sequel Will Release?
Posted on June 12 2019 by John Piland
The new trailer for the Breath of the Wild sequel left many questions in the minds of fans, though there is one sure to be burning within everyone – when will this game release?
In December of 2017, it was reported in the book The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Master Works, that the next Zelda title had begun development. Whether or not Aonuma was referring to this sequel, the Link’s Awakening remake, or something else entirely has yet to be confirmed. However, if the context of “the next Zelda” holds up to that of the next major title, that means this sequel has been in development for at least a year and a half.
The last mainline entry in the franchise took about five years to develop, and a large bulk of that was the brand new physics engine. Given that the new sequel is more likely than not running on the same engine, the development time should be significantly shorter. Assuming that this sequel will have been in development for at least two years by the start of 2020, we could see having this title on our Switches as early as next year, or by 2021 if all is ideal. That is, of course, if the game spoken of in 2017 is the same game revealed at E3 2019.
When do you think the game will release? Could we really own it as soon as next year? Let us know in the comments below!
John has been a Zelda fan for over 10 years now and is proud to say the series has had a major impact on his life (and wallet). After years of going to Zelda Dungeon for guides or the latest news on the series, John achieved their dream when they joined the writing team in 2019; John can hardly believe how long it’s been. A librarian, he loves meticulously arranging his library of Zelda games and collectibles. After what felt like an eternity of waiting for Tears of the Kingdom, John looks forward to the future of the Zelda franchise with enthusiasm, whether that’s the upcoming movie, a new spin-off/remake, or the next big game.
