Early video games started out in a mere two dimensions, The Legend of Zelda being no exception. Whether using the top-down view of many of the games or the sidescrolling perspective of The Adventure of Link, the first four games and several of the subsequent handhelds all managed to exploit those two dimensions to their fullest, providing us with some amazing adventures across lands that we actually couldn’t see all that well. We had to imagine a series of blocks on the screen being a impassible forest or a giant mountain, and some of the items, bosses, and puzzles wouldn’t have worked nearly so well in the third dimension.

And yet…some of them still might. There are numerous aspects of the 2D games that have never truly made the jump to the 3D ones, and I have a feeling that some of them are long overdue. Maybe it’s the sense of a truly connected world, or a certain environment? Perhaps an item you’d love to see make the transition, or a boss that you can almost picture towering over

Link as an epic battle commences?

Me, I’d love to see how they’d translate

Roc’s Feather and Roc’s Cape—being able to jump or glide in a three dimensional world would definitely present some challenges for the dev team, but just think of how much that versatility of movement could unlock! And for bosses, I can only dream of the day that we get to face off against Trinexx. Fire and Ice Arrows are a thing, Nintendo—make it happen! Let us face that giant once more!

How about you guys? What would you like to see brought from the 2D games into the 3D ones?
