Celebration is as much looking forward as it is reflecting back. For the recent anniversary of Four Swords Adventures, I invite everyone to look ahead to ponder if a modern attempt at a Four Swords title should be created?

I’d argue that we need it now more than ever, considering online multiplayer for Tri Force Heroes will no longer be an option in less than a month from the time of writing. On the other hand, multiplayer Zelda games have never been extremely popular and perhaps not in high demand either. There is a definite risk in attempting another Four Swords entry, but there is still untapped potential in multiplayer for the Zelda series.

None of the previous attempts at Zelda multiplayer remaining in the public conscious is precisely why I think a new multiplayer game should be tried. There are so many limitations with Four Swords and Four Swords Adventures, and modernly they are among the least accessible Zelda titles to play. (It’s no wonder they aren’t talked about much; not that many people have played them.) There are quite a few reasons why Tri Force Heroes didn’t perform well, even with it being pretty accessible and offering online multiplayer, but that’s worth a debate of its own.

The Nintendo Switch, or its successor, could give a new Four Swords entry its best chance to succeed with audiences. I imagine by virtue of it being a proper Four Swords title, on a console that has sold over 100 million units (or on the next gen console which would probably create a buzz of its own), all that it would take to make the game sell well is proper marketing and Nintendo showcasing solid gameplay.
