At Zelda Dungeon, we have a once-a-year tradition of writing our Best Zelda Ever article in which we rank the major titles and spin-offs of the Zelda franchise. As passionate Zelda fans, writers, and video game fanatics, we revisit Hyrule in all its forms as often as possible. Of the 22 titles we rank, I have personally played 21, leaving only the hard-to-find The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords for me to play. Thankfully, I finally tracked one down, and it’s on its way in the mail!

As a “professional” Zelda fan, I try to cycle my way through the games, making sure that they are fresh in my mind as I write about them. Of course, there are also my favorites that I revisit regularly. No year would be complete without my playthrough of A Link to the Past.

All of this raises the question, How often must you play Zelda to keep your “fan card”? Is a once a year playthough of at least one title in the franchise the minimum? Of course, the whole notion of keeping your status as a fan could be problematic. Gate-keeping has been a problem in the video game community, where far too often people are excluded or criticized for a lack of expertise or advanced skills within a particular franchise.

So just as fun thought experiment (rather than to exclude anyone), What’s the right amount of play time or playthroughs to keep your Zelda “fan card” status? Share your reactions in the comments below!
