The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker opens with Link being awakened from an afternoon nap by his sister, Aryll. After a brief conversation, Link slowly descends the ladder from his lookout perch and makes his way towards grandma’s house, and then you see him… Snot Kid.

Snot Kid (apparently his name is Zill) is an energetic, inquisitive young lad from Outset Island who has a massive glob of snot hanging from his nose like a Christmas stocking on a fireplace. As soon as he spots Link, he comes bounding over in what is surely a full sprint for the boy. No matter where on the island Link is, if Snot Kid is nearby (and he is everywhere), he will find you, and he will touch you with his snot, because he has no respect for personal space.

I will not let this kid anywhere near me. While there are no in-game consequences for interacting with Snot Kid, it makes me feel icky, like I need to take a shower. If he’s blocking the bridge, I will swim in the ocean. If he’s near the footpath, I will head to the beach or sneak behind his house. I will go to any length necessary to ensure that he is nowhere near me.

Oh, and when he spots you… don’t let him spot you. He elicits the same terror and panic of a Silent Realm Guardian bearing down on you. No horror game has come near the level of dread as Snot Kid turning to face you, snot hanging to the ground, and beelining towards you at a breakneck pace. He makes games like Resident Evil look like Elmo’s Musical Monsterpiece. The rhythmic pip-pop of his stride is more haunting than a Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark book, so much so that I’m surprised more sleep paralysis demons haven’t adopted it into their routine. Snot Kid is undoubtedly one of the Great Sea’s most feared creatures, possibly more so than the Demon King himself.

So tell me, how much do you fear Snot Kid? Have you recognized the terror that he is or are you still blissfully unaware of the monster he is? What lengths would you go to dodge him? Let us know in the comments.
