As the release date for Ocarina of Time’s sequel gets closer, more outlets are publishing their own reviews of the game. Majora’s Mask 3D is already getting good critiques from other sites, and now CNET has put out their review.

CNET opened their review by calling Majora’s Mask the “weirdo B-side to Ocarina of Time” and a “game fewer people have played.” The reviewers certainly thought of Majora’s Mask as some fans do today. . . strange. They don’t dislike the game for its strangeness, though. In fact, that’s one of the factors the reviewers said made the game more memorable. Majora’s Mask was described as both “wonderful” and “disturbing.” The reviewers said the game was like a fever dream.

After reminiscing about the N64 version of the game, CNET’s review continues on to say that the game is back and “feels great” in its 3DS remake. The updated graphics were praised, and the reviewers said Nintendo did a stellar job, just like with Ocarina of Time 3D.

“If you haven’t played it, you must,” said CNET reviewers Jeff Bakalar and Scott Stein.

Still, in spite of praises for the updated graphics, the reviewers don’t urge everyone to rush out and pick up a copy of the game right away. Instead, Bakalar and Stein seemed to imply that if fans had already beaten the N64 version, they didn’t necessarily need to buy the 3D remake, saying, “It likely doesn’t warrant another purchase unless you’re dying to relive it.”

The review closes by saying it’s great to see one of Nintendo’s more forgotten hits get some loving treatment, and Majora’s Mask 3D was described as “another jewel in the 3DS’ collection of franchise classics.” That said, CNET indicated that the cult status of Majora’s Mask may be a hint that Nintendo is nearing the bottom of the barrel in terms of rebooting old Zelda games.

Does this review affect your decision to buy or not buy the game?
