A piece of music that I feel doesn’t get enough recognition within the Zelda community has got to be the Potion Shop theme from Ocarina of Time. It’s a very mysterious theme with a pervading sense of dread in its undercurrents. I found myself on guard during my initial playthrough of Ocarina anytime I heard it, as its morose, string instrument-fueled melody wasn’t exactly the most inviting piece of music I’d ever heard. This sentiment was especially effective given Ganon’s grip on Hyrule after the time jump when you were never sure what could be considered a safe haven during your quest. Music is paramount in conveying the mood and ambiance of a situation or place, and the Potion Shop theme delivers on that ideal in spades.

YouTube user Ro Panuganti has given us a very unique reinterpretation of this theme. Fusing metal with Indian flair, Ro has created something that paints this particular composition in an entirely new light. Searing eight-string guitar riffs join the sitar to invoke the spirit of the original arrangement while at the same time turning it into a jam all its own. Ro’s talent is front and center as his guitar work is nothing short of stunning in this video.

If you like what you heard, be sure to give Ro’s YouTube channel a look for other amazing covers.
