Let’s all take a moment and admit that if we stopped to consider that Zelda’s life was really in peril the entire time during our playthroughs of Breath of the Wild, we would have stopped and gone to save her. Right? Well okay, sure, after a few more shrines… and after that side quest… oh, and upgrading armor… jeez, there are a lot of Korok seeds… What am I supposed to be doing again? Welcome to the collective thought process of every player of Breath of the Wild ever, generally speaking, of course.

In an animation over on Mashed, we are treated to a look at just about every player’s journey with the game from a slightly aggravated Princess Zelda’s perspective. Beginning with Link performing that tried-and-true Korok hunting technique known as “lift-every-rock,” the video then introduces Zelda, who reminds him that she needs his help defeating Ganon. From a visit to the Great Fairy to building a town, Link manages to do everything but his duty. Naturally, Link’s journey through all these tasks leads to Zelda’s aggravation with the would-be hero, before ultimately taking matters into her own hands.

This short is one of those that kind of hits everything right for me. From Zelda’s escalation of “what are you doing?” to “I’ll do this myself, you [insert foul but deserving name]!” The colorful language might not be for everybody; however, I found it to be used exactly right. Link’s character here felt like the animated series meets Breath of the Wild meme culture in a way. I also found it pretty funny when the villagers carry Link off triumphantly and Zelda basically shrugs it off as an expected occurrence.

Mashed has released quite a few more Zelda animations over the past few months. You can check out their channel here.
