Screen Shot 2013-07-25 at 11.28.15 PM USgamer recently had an interview with Eiji Aonuma, one of the major people involved with the Zelda series, and talked about the upcoming The Wind Waker HD. One of the things in particular that they talked about was the fact that some of the changes that they made for the remake was due to Aonuma remembering certain parts of the game differently than how it actually is in the game.

One small example that Aonuma gave would be when Link goes to pull up a treasure chest out of the water. Aonuma didn’t remember it taking as long as it did in the original, but when he was watching some demos he noticed that it shouldn’t have taken as long as it did.

USG: Can you give me any examples of things you’ve misremembered? Does anything come to mind?

EA: Just like I said before, 12 years have passed. Over time, I’ve worked on various different titles, and I’ve had lots of different experiences. There are lots of things where you think, “Well, this was done in a certain way. It was really sharp and fast and crisp. It worked really well.” And then you go back and look at the game and you realize, “Gosh, it really wasn’t.” My memory says it’s this way, and it wasn’t.

“Among those things are the close-ups on different items, the demo scenes showing how different items work. When you’re in the boat and pulling up a treasure, I didn’t envision it being that long. This time around, I was like, “Wow, does it really take this long?” I was a little bit impatient about how long it took. We needed to take a look at things like that and figure out a way to make them a bit shorter, so we’re tightening things up. So one example is pulling treasure up from the ocean.”

There were a few other things that were changed during this process. One of which is the famous Triforce map quest which took so long to do in the original. In The Wind Waker HD it has been fixed to make it considerably less time consuming. Other than those though, there are a few other changes that were made in the game to help make it more streamlined and less of a hassle to play during those particular parts.
