Have you ever heard of the Zelda game known as Ancient Stone Tablets? You may have learned of it by browsing the ZD Wiki, but never actually taken into consideration what it is, other than some BS Legend of Zelda spin-off only available in Japan. YouTube user UnknownArchive produced this 12-minute video all about the game.

It turns out Ancient Stone Tablets isn’t just a spin-off, it’s a sequel to A Link to the Past! Most people would never have guessed it. The game actually fits into the Zelda timeline well (although not mentioned in the official one); the younger brother of Sahasrahla was out on a walk with Princess Zelda, where they come across a cave. In that cave is the hero of the story, however he is not Link. Zelda proclaims him the Hero of Light and must defeat all the monsters. From there, it’s in the usual Zelda style of dungeon hopping.

Interestingly enough, since the last week of the game’s release window, Nintendo has shown no interest in this game at all. The only way to get your hands on a playable version of it is through a heavily modded emulation.

I think that this title would be a fun and engaging one to release as a 3D Classic, or Virtual Console title on the Nintendo 3DS. Not only would it raise awareness to this rare masterpiece, but it would be a fun “side-story” (which is technically more appropriate than using the word “sequel”) for fans to play again. Do you think this game deserves a second lifespan? If so, would you play it, or would you let it come and go?
