Gohma (OoT)We all know how intimidating some Zelda boss fights can be. After all, most of the time Link is just some tiny kid and he is facing off against huge, ancient, and powerful creatures. The artwork that comes out of these experiences is often breathtaking and impressive, and we’ve all seen depictions of skulltulas that make us cringe and keep the lights on at night. But we’ve found some art pieces that combine the giddy adventurer and the terrifying obstacles and put some of those boss fights in perspective.

Hit the jump to see what we mean!

Although most Zelda bosses were large, did you ever feel insignificant when the doors closed behind you and the monster rose out of seemingly nothing to become a monolith? I usually felt determined, disgusted, or just freaked out. I never felt like the challenge was insurmountable or that my tiny avatar was really so small, because let’s face it, Link is a powerful and capable hero. The pictures below show the first real bosses of Ocarina of Time and The Wind Waker, Gohma and Kalle Demos, respectively. Just notice the scaling and how Link is shown and let me know if you agree with my conclusion about these pieces.

So let’s say we have a layman’s understanding of artwork- take into consideration the difference between the foreground, the background, and how to identify the subject of a piece. Looking at these pictures, what do you think is the subject, Link or the boss? My opinion is that these are depictions of the bosses, and these are the boss’ rooms. Link is an interloper and the monsters are understandably unafraid of him. But the great thing is that we know Link can, and does, win the battles despite his dinky little slingshot and facing plant claws as big as his whole body.

Let me know what you think about these awesome depictions in the comments! And just for fun here is another piece, done by the same artist, of our favorite plumber, Mario.
