BeetleIt seems as though Nintendo is being quite secretive about the upcoming Super Smash Bros. games for the Wii U and 3DS. It seems as though once a new character has been announced we don’t hear anything else for a weeks or even a few months. However, it seems as though the character roster isn’t the only aspect of the upcoming games that is changing. A recent Miiverse post by series creator and director Masahiro Sakurai has shown that the Beetle from Skyward Sword will be included in the new Smash Bros. games.

The Beetle was a great new addition to Link’s arsenal in Skyward Sword and one I hope will make an appearance in future Zelda games. Judging from the Miiverse post it seems the Beetle’s role in Smash Bros. will  be quite different to what it was in Skyward Sword:

In Skyward Sword, the Beetle was used to carry objects or collect items out of reach, but in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U it will be used as a weapon. As Link is using the Beetle in the picture it could mean it will be one of Link’s special attacks, possibly replacing the boomerang, arrow or bombs rather than being used alongside them. Thing is, with the way Sakurai describes it as a “comical item” it could mean that it will be one of the randomly appearing items that anyone can use. The fight between Link and Marth is clearly taking place in Skyloft so it could also be an item that only appears in that stage, seeing as the stage and item appear in the same game.

Link is one of my favorite fighters in the Smash Bros. franchise so I’m hoping they aren’t replacing one of his existing weapons as I make use of all the ones he has but I’m very interested in seeing how the Beetle will be implemented. We know it will carry the person captured into the air but but we’ll have to wait and see what happens next. Hopefully it’ll do more than just let go.

Do you think it will make a good addition to Link’s weapons or would you prefer it if anyone could make use of it? What other items from the Zelda series could be useful in the next Smash Bros. game? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
