Just when we thought we knew it all, Aonuma reveals in a new interview that one of the key aspects of the new Zelda game heading to the 3DS was totally wrong: A Link Between Worlds is not a direct sequel to A Link to the Past. It takes place at least one generation after those events.

When asked by Kotaku if the overworld in A Link Between Worlds will be 1-to-1 identical to that of A Link to the Past, Aonuma revealed this major gem:

“It’s not a direct sequel in the sense that it’s the same Link and Zelda. The world is the same and it might be a different generation of Link and Zelda.”

He went on to clarify that the landscape will be changed up a bit, saying:

“It’s the same world. It’s the same space. But in the same way that, over time, the topography can change, there will be some changes. The land will be affected a little bit. The dungeons, for the most part, will be in the same place, but inside might change. Now that I say that out loud, it sounds a little strange, but we’re making decisions based on what’s best for gameplay. We’re picking and choosing what we change and what we don’t, so players can expect some changes.”

I have to say, I’m very happy with this news. While I will always have a special place in my heart for the Link from A Link to the Past, I felt that he already had his own share of sequels (Link’s Awakening, Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons) and when it was assumed he would be returning in this 3DS game, I didn’t really see how that could work very smoothly. So to find out it will be a different Link and that at least one generation has passed puts me at ease on that front. And it also solves another issue that I found daunting: if it is the exact same overworld as was shown in A Link to the Past, won’t it feel too much of a retread? Well with this refreshing news, the answer is a resounding “no!” because they are allowing themselves to change the topography due to the passing of generations.

What do you think? Are you glad that the game will featuer a new Link and Zelda with a changed up overworld? Let us know in the comments!
